ROOTS - Pierre Fontenelle
I sing the cello eclectic. My first connection with the prince of all instruments wasn’t through sonatas or solfège, but through Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. With no teachers or formal guidance, I began by imitating Yo-Yo Ma and Apocalyptica on YouTube. Looking back, this unconventional start shaped my curious and uninhibited approach to music, blending classical repertoire with contemporary, bluegrass, and world music alike.
On ROOTS, you’ll hear pieces by Caroline Shaw, Reena Esmail, Andrea Casarrubios, as well as shorter folk-inspired works by the Punch Brothers and Mark Summer.
A heartfelt thank you to the Jousset-Drouhin family, the King Baudouin Foundation, Jean-Marie Marchal, Le Grand Manège, Jean-Marc Lonfils, Camille De Rijck, Ben Simernitski, Preston Singletary, Max Charue, and Frin Wolter for their invaluable support in bringing this album to life. L'excellent ensemble belge de musique de chambre Oxalys se consacre ici à trois chefs-d'œuvre américains dans leur programmation originale de musique de chambre : du grand classique américain Aaron Copland avec son ballet Appalachian Spring aux mythiques Shaker Loops de l'icône de la musique minimale John Adams (ici dans la version originale pour sextuor à cordes, rarement entendue), en passant par le Meeelaan, funky et groovy de l'idole du jazz Wynton Marsalis. Trois facettes séduisantes d'une culture musicale indépendante, florissante et inspirante, capturées comme toujours avec magistralement par Oxalys.
